Sofia Subway Extension Funded by Japanese Loan to Start Today Sofia Subway Extension Funded by Japanese Loan to Start Today The extension of Sofia subway funded by a loan from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation is to start today. The first sod is to be turned by Sofia Mayor Stefan Sofianski and representatives of the chief contractor of the project Japan's Taisei. It filed the cheapest offer for extension of Sofia underground and the company signed a contract for the construction of the second underground railway stretch between Serdika Station and the existing tunnel under Dragan Tzankov Blvd. including the construction of the subway stations by the Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski and the Yunak Stadium. The total length of the stretch is 2350m. All the work would be carried out underground and the tunnels will be between 8m and 18m deep. The underground is expected to reach the Mladost residential area in the eastern part of the city by 2007.
